Tech Tidbits: Best Start Since 2017 for Wonder Boys

Deuce Wise 10-12-2024
Arkansas Tech running back Deuce Wise finds a running lane against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Simmons Bank Field at Thone Stadium in Russellville.

Arkansas Tech University is 4-2 with six games in the books and five games remaining in the 2024 football regular season.

It’s the Wonder Boys’ best record at this point in the season since 2017, which is also the year in which Arkansas Tech posted its most recent winning football season.

Kyle Shipp, ATU head football coach, is imploring his team to remain focused on improvement as the Wonder Boys prepare to face the University of Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils for a 4 p.m. contest at Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium in Monticello on Saturday, Oct. 19.

“We have a lot of grit,” said Shipp. “We’ve overcome a lot of obstacles…and a lot of that goes back to leadership from our older guys. As a result, our guys are believing in themselves and believing they can win football games. We’ve got to continue that. We have to keep working and continue to understand what the focus is each week. If we do that, we have a chance to have a very successful year.”

UAM (2-4) is led by senior quarterback Demilon Brown, who has passed for 6,924 yards and 52 touchdowns and rushed for 2,700 yards and 31 touchdowns over the span of his five-year career with the Boll Weevils.

Arkansas Tech counters with a rushing attack that has accumulated more than 200 yards in three of its four wins.

Last Saturday, junior Deuce Wise carried 20 times for 166 yards in the Wonder Boys’ 29-19 Homecoming win over Southwestern Oklahoma State University. It was the highest single-game rushing total by an ATU player since Bryan Allen carried for 175 yards against Southern Nazarene University on Sept. 22, 2018.

Live coverage of the ATU-UAM game will be available on KCJC 102.3 FM, the EAB Media Group app and www.arkansastechsports.com.
