Wonder Boys Complete Sweep of CBU

Matt Johnson went 3-for-5 with a home run and three runs batted in to spearhead a 13-0 Arkansas Tech victory over the Christian Brothers Buccaneers in Gulf South Conference baseball at Tech Field in Russellville on Sunday.

The mercy rule-shortened win gave the Wonder Boys (25-11 overall, 7-1 GSC) a three-game sweep of the Buccaneers (4-26, 0-8). Tech out-scored CBU 46-11 during the weekend series.

The Wonder Boys already led 2-0 before Johnson led off the bottom of the third inning with a home run down the right field line. A two-run triple by Colt Loehrs increased Tech’s advantage to 5-0.

Landon Sullins added an RBI single and Joe Walton delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0 Tech after three innings.

That was far more support than Blaine Sims and Gino Spratley would need.

Sims (3-3) started and pitched five shutout innings for the Wonder Boys. He struck out six and scattered five hits.

Spratley pitched two perfect innings in relief to help Tech win it early thanks to the 10-run lead after seven innings mercy rule.

Loehrs, Sullins and Chad Wynn had two hits apiece for the Wonder Boys on Sunday. Loehrs finished the series 7-for-13 with three home runs and 11 RBIs.

Tech will return to action at 2 p.m. Friday when it begins a three-game series with nationally-ranked Southern Arkansas at Tech Field in Russellville.

The Muleriders (27-3, 8-0) own a one-game lead over the Wonder Boys for first place in the GSC West Division standings. Southern Arkansas has won 16 consecutive games.
