Great American Conference champion Arkansas Tech was able to grind out a 74-66 win over the Southern Arkansas Muleriders in the men’s basketball regular season finale for both sides Saturday night at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.
Johnie Davis scored 28 points as the Wonder Boys (21-5 overall, 13-3 GAC) finished the regular season with an 11-1 home record.
Southern Arkansas (13-15, 6-10) led 45-42 with 13:03 left in the second half, but Arkansas Tech rattled off a 17-5 spurt to claim a 59-50 advantage with 8:01 remaining.
Juvon Demerson’s 3-point play with 1:17 left pulled the Muleriders within 70-64. Davis helped hold SAU off with a layup at the 1:01 mark and a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to go.
Demerson led the Muleriders in a losing effort with 17 points.
Arkansas Tech and Southern Arkansas will meet againĀ in the first round of the GAC Tournament at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 1.
All games at the GAC Tournament will be played at Bruin Fieldhouse in Bartlesville, Okla., and any game involving Arkansas Tech at the event can be heard on KWKK 100.9 FM and www.athletics.atu.edu.
The Wonder Boys were 2-0 against the Muleriders during the regular season. Tech defeated SAU 89-72 in Magnolia on Jan. 28.
