Seven was the lucky number for the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys baseball team on Saturday.
Arkansas Tech defeated Arkansas-Monticello 7-4 and 7-1 to sweep a Great American Conference doubleheader from the Boll Weevils at Tech Field in Russellville.
With the victories, the Wonder Boys (18-21 overall, 7-8 GAC) bounced back from a 3-2 loss to UAM on Friday and won the three-game series.
Scott Sammons put Arkansas Tech in front for good in game one with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. His first round-tripper of the season gave the Wonder Boys a 6-4 edge.
Chris Reese added an RBI single later in the inning, and that was more than enough for the relief pitching combination of Cody Hatman and Jonathan Finnegan.
Hatman (2-3) pitched three and one-third innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. Finnegan got the final two outs for his fourth save of the season.
Arkansas Tech starting pitcher Zak Anstine (4-0) dominated game two. He held the Boll Weevils to one run on two hits while pitching his second complete game of the season.
Anstine struck out nine and walked one. He retired the final 11 UAM hitters.
The Wonder Boys put the lead-off man on base in five of their six at-bats in the nightcap. Finnegan hit his 11th home run of the season — a three-run blast in the bottom of the first inning.
Madison Beaird, Thomas Biocic and Nate Wilder all drove in one run apiece for Arkansas Tech in its game two win.
Arkansas-Monticello fell to 15-21 overall and 5-14 in the GAC with its two losses on Saturday.
The Wonder Boys will visit Harding University for a three-game GAC baseball series on Saturday, April 14, and Sunday, April 15.
Saturday’s doubleheader will start at noon, while Sunday’s single game is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
All three games can be heard on KCAB 980 AM.
