Arkansas Tech University Student Government Association selected Albert Zhang as its 2019-20 senator of the year.
Zhang was a sophomore at ATU during the recently completed academic year. A native of Zhanjiang, China, Zhang is majoring in business data analytics with a minor in mathematics.
In his role as head of the SGA food committee, Zhang worked with representatives from the ATU Division of Student Affairs and Chartwells, food service provider at ATU, to gauge student preferences and create plans to better match those preferences. He has also served SGA as international senator.
During the 2020-21 academic year, Zhang will be secretary of diversity and inclusion on the SGA executive board.
“I would like to further my leadership role representing the voice of international and minority students at Tech,” said Zhang. “I’m looking forward to coordinating with the Office of International Student Services and the Department of Diversity and Inclusion as well as student organizations such as the Chinese Student Association, Hispanic Student Association and African American Student Association. Helping them promote their events school-wide will be my main goal in this new position so that our campus can become more inclusive by interacting with each other and strive for mutual understanding.”
Zhang intends to pursue a career in data analytics following his graduation from ATU.
“I think ATU has a welcoming and friendly environment that other big universities cannot reach,” said Zhang. “I think it is a part of the Tech spirit that always motivates me to move forward, keep positive, overcome obstacles and become the person that I want to be.”
